All sports are special, but the "Boys of
Summer" own America's heart. The national pastime is and
always will be
BASEBALL

Playing by
pre-1880 rules (as do the players on this Mansfield, Ohio, team)
gives advantages to the defense (catching the ball on one bounce
means the batter is out) and gives advantages to the batter
(the pitcher tosses underhanded in "a manner suitable to the
batter"). Both teams are expected to display "gentlemanly
sportsmanship".
Tribe Makes Post Season
(Briefly)
The Cleveland
Indians finished the 2013 Season 92 and 70, good enough for 2nd
place in the American League Central, one game behind first
place Detroit. The tribe won all of their last 10 regular
season games to earn a wildcard berth, but were one and done in
the post season, blanked 4 to 0 by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Tribe bats almost put starting Rays pitcher Alex Cob on the
robes in both the 4th and 5th innings, but Cleveland failed to
score both times. Tampa Bay went on to experience the Red
Sox buzz saw, falling 12 to 2 and 7 to 4 in games 1 and 2 of the
series before pulling off a 5 to 4 win in game 3. The end
for the Rays came in game 4, with Boston advancing on a 3 to 1
win.

Boston Captures Their
Third World Series Title in Nine Years
The St Louis Cardinals literally got run over by a freight
train called fate. The Cards, favored by some going into
the series with Boston, never found their rhythm against the
Red Sox who ousted St Louis in six games, winning the final
contest by a 6 to 1 score. The Sox entered the play-offs
after having led the American East with 97 wins. On a
team which is all-around good there are sometimes no
stand-outs, but Boston had World Series MVP David Ortiz,
hitting a blistering .688 and playing some respectable "D" at
first base during the three games in the series which did not
allow a designated hitter.
Cleveland says Goodbye to
Perez
Closer Chris Perez tossed 25 saves for the Tribe this past
season, but that was not enough to save his job in Cleveland.
Chris was invited, instead, to take his sometimes ill-advised
off the field comments to some other city, although insiders
say earlier efforts by Cleveland to find a team which wanted
Perez in a trade found no takers. |
